Self-defense highlighted in Huntsville after kidnapping in Philadelphia

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WAAY) – Disturbing video released by Philadelphia Police this week shows a hooded man appearing to drag 22-year-old Carlesha Freeland-Gaither down the street and force her into a car.

Police released this frightening footage in the hopes of catching an apparent kidnapper, and they did just that. They arrested 37-year-old Delven Barnes Wednesday.

And they found Carlesha Freeland-Gaither inMaryland, unharmed.

So, the question becomes, how can you better protect yourself in situations like this?

In a study of attempted kidnappings back in 2006, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children found that six out of ten victims fought back, and successfully escaped.

“Just mainly the news, and seeing all those girls getting kidnapped and taken and stuff, so it made me want to come try it out,” says Courtney Burns, about her decision to start Krav Maga.

Courtney burns is a student at Wallace State, and drives 45 minutes into Huntsville just for self-defense classes.

“Mainly for self protection and for it to always be in my back pocket in case I’m going out that night and I need some protection, and maybe I can help out a friend if they need it,” says Courtney.

Claymore Krav Maga is one of several self-defense centers here in the Tennessee Valley.

“Krav Maga is an Israeli method of self-defense,” says Ryan Rushton, the owner of Claymore Krav Maga. “There seems to be a rash in the headlines of high profile attacks on realtors, to the lady who was abducted in Philadelphia this week. We get a lot of concern.”

One of the most important things Ryan and his team teach is awareness.

“We teach, first and foremost, to have good habits, and to be aware of your surroundings. Spot danger before it develops. If you do see it developing, to position yourself away from it, and if you’re not able to do that, then to verbally de-escalate, to be assertive and, then and only then, if that doesn’t work, to go 100% aggressive and protect yourself physically,” says Rushton.

And make sure you’re ready, if the need for a fight develops.

“We don’t know how fit or strong our attacker is going to be, but something we can control is how fit, aggressive and trained we are, so if we can stack those factors in our favor, then the odds of survival are much greater when you have those working in your favor,” Rushton says.

“I would recommend it for anyone,” says Courtney.

Realtors get schooled in self-defense

POSTED 10:54 PM, NOVEMBER 13, 2014, BY

MERRIAM, Kan. — The kidnapping and murder of an Arkansas real estate agent put a fear in realtors across the country. Here in the metro, a group is trading that fear for awareness.

Forty-nine-year old Beverly Carter went to show a home just outside of Little Rock, Ark. in late September and no one ever saw her again. Her body was found in a shallow grave a few days later.

Carter wasn’t a rookie, she knew to let people know where she was going and when, but it wasn’t enough.

“Some of our agents came to us and said, ‘hey, that’s a rough deal.’ We really wanted to be able to provide them with some tools to be able to defend themselves,” explained Cory Stewart

Stewart is with Weichert Realtors. He knew just the person to talk to, Damon Comerio. He’s a home builder and a Krav Maga enthusiast. Comerio connected Stewart with Steve Woolridge, the owner of Krav Maga and Fitness Center in Merriam.

“The biggest thing is just awareness,” Steve Woolridge told his class of realtors.

It’s a big part, but not the only piece of advice Woolridge shared with this group of realtors. For a couple of hours, he showed the group of mostly women how to protect and defend themselves. The goal: To teach them to fight long enough to get away or to get the attacker to give up. Many of the moves are easy, but also powerful and can inflict pain

But Woolridge also helped open the realtors eyes to other dangers.

“I won’t go downstairs before somebody else, or go inside rooms before someone else, I will always make sure somebody goes in before. It helped me with thinking on my feet more and being more aware,” said Krissy Kempinger of Weichert Realtors.

Stewart and Woolridge are hopeful the agents who took the class will go back to their offices and share their experiences. He’s sure it will lead to more classes in the future.

Women Learn Self Defense Through The Krav Maga ‘Stay Away Program’

    • MORGANTOWN –

Women often think, ‘It can’t happen to me,’ but the fact is that one in four women experience rape or sexual assault in their lifetime. Even if you’re not one of those women, wouldn’t it be nice to know you could protect yourself in that situation? Krav Maga West Virginia teaches women just that.

Krav Maga teaches how to defend yourself and get away from a bad situation, fast.

Angela Gray has been a student for almost a year.

“I was a victim. I did things where we had violence towards us,” said Gray. “I learned how to do non-threatening skills as a teach and as a life skills teach and this, this is what you need out on the road.”

A new student says she thinks women knowing self defense in this day and age is imperative.

“We’re women and we’re seen as the most vulnerable of the two genders,” she said. “You never know when an attack is going to come upon you, or when somebody is going to try to assault you physically so I think it’s good to know which skills and tactics you can use to your advantage.”

The Krav Maga instructors teach the ‘Stay Away Program’

“It was developed by the IKMF, the International Krav Maga Federation,” said John Woods, an Instructor at Krav Maga West Virginia. “It’s about a three month curriculum that is applied directly towards women and it’s meant to really empower them so that women can walk in peace.”

Anything goes in Krav Maga. And the instructors encourage the students to give it their all.

“You never know what’s going to happen,” said Gray. “As a victim, I’ve been followed home, I’ve had stalkers. Even as a young teenager I wish I knew this stuff back then. I probably wouldn’t have been a victim.”
