Traditional martial arts have their roots in combat tactics used on the battlefield. Many Japanese arts are based on the fighting techniques of the samurai. Modern teaching methods may have softened the application of these techniques, but they can still be effective in street fights.
How do you defend yourself in karate?
It’s quite hard to defend yourself when you have someone hands in your face.
- Palm Strikes. The palm strike is a safe and effective alternative to the punch.
- Forearm Strike. The forearm strike is one of my favorite close combat strikes.
- Elbow Strike.

Yes. It’s only useful when Karate practitioners adapted to MMA and mix boxing/muaythai/etc into it. But a straight up karate guy would get destroyed by your typical MMA brawler.

Should I learn to fight?
It isn’t necessary or overly needed, but shows mild importance, making it relevant and even beneficial for people who practice it or apply it to their lives. It is, by no means, necessary. So I suggest that if you have enough free time and disposition, learning how to fight can be very good for you, even priceless.
