- Wash your gi correctly by turning it inside out before washing it in cool water.
- Hang your gi to dry inside.
- Once your gi is dry, rewash in warm/hot water.
- Place the gi in the dryer on a reduced heat setting.
- After the gi is dry, try it on for size.
Can you put a judo gi in the dryer?
Do hang them after washing and rinsing. This is the most important, although the gi may feel a little stiff when you put it on, however, you massively extend the life-cycle of the gi and prevent it from shrinking altogether. Don’t throw them in the dryer UNLESS you ‘re intentionally trying to shrink it.
How do you soften judo gi?
Wash it and dry it with a dryer sheet. It won’t get ruined by going through a single drying cycle. But it will likely shrink quite a bit. Using vinegar like you do bleach would help with softening it, and it will not harm the material like a softener does.

Gis will shrink a little on their own just from washing, but you can increase that by drying, especially on hotter settings. That said, the most you can shrink any gi is about half a size, maybe up to one full size with a heavy gold weave.

How do I get the smell out of my GI?
You might want to soak for 10-20 minutes. Let rinse and spin cycle complete before adding your prefered laundry detergent and running a normal cycle. Vinegar was the most effective in removing a nasty smell but, it also dried my uniforms out like a prune and made the house smell like I was canning cucumbers.
