Does judo have groundwork?
Judo places more emphasis on throwing, of course, and BJJ is more ground-oriented, but Judo groundwork (known as ‘newaza’) isn’t entirely dissimilar to BJJ groundwork.
Does judo teach ground fighting?
Yes. The Kodokan judo syllabus contains a fair amount of ground fighting techniques and even though it has lost some prominence and focus because of current international competition rules, it is still there and a lot of clubs still put a decent amount of training focus on it. BJJ was developed directly from judo.
Is judo effective in real life?
Yes. Judo can be used in a real street fight because it is a practical martial art and anyone can learn it. It uses the opponent’s strength against him, teaches ground work, and striking hard is not a necessity. This makes Judo very useful in a real fight.
Is judo harder than BJJ?
The movements aren’t harder or anything, although I think that classic Judo has a slightly larger catalog of movements than classic BJJ. Simply because it covers more ground, no pun intended.

Can I learn judo at 40?
We have a few people at my club who are 40 + and still training regularly. If you’re in good shape it’s well within your reach. You will have to be a bit more measured in your training than the young guys but it’s certainly possible. Lady at my judo school just turned 50 and she’s a force to be reckoned with.
Is judo hard on the body?
Anecdotally, Judo can be absolutely brutal on your body: After years of dedication to judo it gave me a black belt (first dan) and unparalleled skills at taking anyone down. That sport is probably the most tough on the joints ever, and to be competing in it will add 60 years to your body.
