How to wash a BJJ gi
- Wash your gi immediately after training.
- Always wash your belt.
- Scrub stains with running cold water immediately before washing.
- Avoid bleach.
- Turn your gi inside out before washing.
- Wash in cold water on a gentle setting.
- If you’re washing your gi with other clothes, only wash with similar colours.
How do you soften judo gi?
Wash it and dry it with a dryer sheet. It won’t get ruined by going through a single drying cycle. But it will likely shrink quite a bit. Using vinegar like you do bleach would help with softening it, and it will not harm the material like a softener does.
How do you wash and dry GI?

Should I wash my gi before use?
YES! You should wash all clothes before their first use, if possible. Some things like tube socks, are made almost entirely by machine.
How often should you wash your GI?
Do wash them after every practice. This will keep them from catching any foul odor and keep your skin a little cleaner from random infections. Some instructors will advise that you hang them and air them out to maybe get one more use out of it, however, this is not sanitary at all.
How long does it take for a GI to air dry?
I wash and machine dry all of my gis. Box fan takes me about 4 hours in a dry climate. Air setting on my dryer seems to take longer. I used to buy larger gis for karate, shrink them as far as they would go, and then dry on hot every time.
How do I soften my GI?
After your gi air dries, you can throw it in the dryer on the “air” or “fluff” setting with no heat for a few minutes. This will soften it up considerably.
How do you iron a GI?
Lay the Karate Gi on the ironing board one leg at a time. The leg should be spread out over the entire length of the board with one portion hanging freely. Lay the iron gently on the Gi and move it from side to side down the length of the leg. For harder wrinkles move in a circular motion.
Can you tumble dry a judo gi?
Do not tumble dry. You can fold it and make a knot with the belt to avoid entangeling with other clothes. Beware, colored belts bleed, make sure not to wash your colored belt with your white Judogi.
How many GIS should I own?
Regardless of how many times per week you train, if it is more than one, you need two Gis. The reason for this is that you need to have a fresh Gi each time you come into training.

A little heat goes a long way The preferred method of drying your gi is letting it air dry. Take care air – drying in direct sunlight, however. While the sun’s ultraviolet rays have a natural anti-bacterial effect, it can fade colors and the heat can potentially shrink the cotton fibers.
